Arts Council to Issue Grants
"By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) will this morning announce and hand over arts and culture grants to the first recipients at a press conference at a local hotel. The National Arts Council received more than 200 applications in November last year from Namibian artists across the country. ""It is a known fact that artists in Namibia receive the least support when they want to carry out their creative exploits and that is why the Government of Namibia passed the National Arts Fund Act No. 1 of 2005 in order to establish a body that is primarily tasked to assist in the growth and support of the local arts sector,"" said NAC administrator M'Kariku Amagulu in a press release. She said one of the main activities of the fund is to give grants to artists to carry out art-related activities aimed at building capacity, promote artists to offer them a start to be able to make a sustainable living. The council operates under the motto: ""Unlocking the creative potential of the Nation"" and is expected to give grants of up to N$1 million this morning to deserving artists and arts organisations. There were 200 applications and successful applicants consist of 72 in music, five in dance, and 14 involved with theatre. For the rest of the disciplines, 22 applications were received for literature, seven for media arts and 40 for visual arts. "
