AU Gives Mugabe the Nod
"By Desie Heita Windhoek One 'brave' African country proposed to the African Union (AU) that Zimbabwe be suspended from both the AU and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). However, the proposal was rejected and African leaders resolved to recognise Robert Mugabe as the President of Zimbabwe. Although, all the leaders agree that there is a problem is Zimbabwe, they opted to shift the responsibility back to Zimbabweans to resolve the problem. President Hifikepunye Pohamba, who just returned from the AU summit in Egypt, said the AU ""mandated SADC, and the South African President Thabo Mbeki, to continue with mediation efforts as it has been"". The AU also asked the Zimbabweans to discuss ways of working together to form a government of national unity that would move among the people. Pohamba also said Mugabe has informed the AU that his party, the ZANU-PF, is in formal discussions with the opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change. The summit also discussed, after which it reaffirmed, the resolutions taken at the United Nation's special summit on food the crisis, in Rome last month. In these resolutions the world governments merely ""expressed grave concerns at the worsening of the world food crisis, which seriously undermines the realisation of the right to food for all,"" and that ""the crisis threatens to further undermine the achievement of Millennium Development Goals, in particular Goal 1 aiming at halving by 2015 the proportion of people who suffer from hunger"".
