Bank Supports Maths in Colleges
"By Marlize Horn The Bank Windhoek Social Investment Fund is once again proud to announce its investment in the education of Namibia's youth with a sponsorship of mathematics kits for colleges to the value of N$30ÃÆ'Æ'ÀÃ...ÃÆ''šÃ‚ 000, it was announced in a press statement. As part of this project, the Namibian Mathematics Institute delivers workshops to prospective teachers and provides them with the mathematics kits. These efforts are aimed at equipping teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge on how to teach the subject in a very practical and learner-friendly way. The Mathematics Institute visited colleges in Rundu and Ongwediva, and will also present workshops in Windhoek in November 2006 and in Katima Mulilo in January 2007. Due to the large amount of under-qualified mathematics teachers, about one out of every three students is unable to achieve any grade in mathematics in the Grade 12 examination. Poor education in mathematics in the beginning of a child's school career can even have a bad effect on a tertiary level. Subjects like Business Mathematics at the University of Namibia have a pass rate of less then 50%. ""As a bank, we understand the importance of mathema-tics and therefore we would like to improve the mathematical skills of all learners in Namibia"", said Marlize Horn, Senior Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communication at Bank Windhoek."
