Beach volleyball championship at the coast
Swakopmund Bank Windhoek announced it will once again sponsor the Namibian Open Beach Volleyball Championship this year. The two day 2016 Bank Windhoek Open Beach Volleyball Championship will take place at Mole Beach in Swakopmund on Saturday, March 19. The event will be preceded by a free coaching session for the youth on Friday, March 18. This session will be led by the NVF national beach volleyball coach and will give an opportunity to local boys and girls, aged between 8 - 13 years, to try beach volleyball, have fun and develop some basic skills. This coaching will be free of charge. Categories for this year’s open are Experienced Men, Experienced Women, Girls Under 18, Social 2-a-Side, Boys Under 18 and Mixed 4-a-Side. “We have some exciting developments this year in the beach volleyball world in Namibia. The Namibian Volleyball Federation has decided to follow the same successful strategy that it has used for indoor (6-a-Side) volleyball and move its focus away from the capital and into the regions. “This means that the NVF will only host two beach volleyball events this year, namely, the open event on independence weekend (March 19 – 20) and one in Oshakati in July,” says James Verrinder, director of beach volleyball at the NVF. The open competition will see the top Namibian beach volleyball athletes taking part, including the 2015 open winner and the men’s beach tour champion Jan-Eric Sack, as well as the 2015 ladies beach tour champion and Queen of the Beach Rosi Hennes. “We are very pleased to welcome one of our national ladies team pairs, Stephanie Palmhert and Rosi Hennes, who will be jetting off to Nigeria early in April to the CAVB Continental Cup finals with the chance to win a place at the Rio Olympics,” Verrinder said. “We look forward to welcoming teams to Mole Beach for another great independence weekend on the sand. Once again we have fantastic sponsorship and support from Bank Windhoek for the national open beach volleyball championship with a massive N$30 000 in sponsorship,” Verrinder said. Deadline for entries is March 18. Please email beach@namibiavolleyball.org or call: James on 081 455 4571 for further details or entry forms.
