Boy swept away by flood still missing
Keetmanshoop The three-year-old boy who was swept away by a torrent of rainwater last Thursday is still missing despite an extensive police search. The little boy went missing after he was swept away from his mother’s hands by strong floodwaters while trying to get to higher ground from their flooded reed house at Komsberg farm, about 70 kilometres south-east of Ariamsvlei. The //Karas regional crime coordinator Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Isaak said the search has so far not yielded any positive results, adding that the heaps of sand brought down by the flood are hampering their search efforts. He said an excavator was used to help remove the sand and the police have now covered most of the area from where the boy is suspected to have been swept away. “Our members are still on the ground, the search went until the banks of the Orange River,” he said. Meanwhile help for the affected people at the farm keeps pouring in, mostly from the community members who are donating items such as clothes, utensils and blankets. Karasburg East Constituency Councillor Dennis Coetzee revealed this in a telephonic interview, adding that the situation at the farm is not normal as yet but it’s better than before. He said his office is busy collecting things from the public and will deliver whatever is given to the people this Friday. “The response from the community is overwhelming,” he said. He also said the two companies Komsberg and Desert Fruit are willing to help the workers to rebuild their houses and he has asked them to get rid of the reed houses, adding that the only problem with regard to housing is the lack of land at Desert Fruit farm. “I don’t know how and where the workers of Desert Fruit will be relocated,” he said. He also revealed the last person to be admitted to hospital due to injuries from the flooding is doing fine and should be out of hospital by today.
