Brave Gladiators impress in Spain
Windhoek Brave Gladiators recorded an important 2-1 victory over Levante during their Spanish Women Football International Tournament clash, which is underway in Valencia, Spain. The Gladiators, despite some players having lost their luggage in transit to Valencia, were in the right frame of mind when they opened their Group A match against Levante. After a goalless first half, Brave Gladiators inspirational playmaker Zenatha Coleman scored with a great free kick a minute into the second half, and a few moments later the diminutive Juliana Skrywer scored a second goal in the 48th minute. The Spanish club got a consolation goal in the 66th minute courtesy of Andrea Palacios Mani. Last night, the Gladiators took on tournament favourites, the ladies of Athletico Bilbao, and the latter, inspired by their male counterparts’ 4-0 humbling of Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, got the all-important victory over the visiting Namibians. “It was a very good game of football. Bilbao is a very strong team and they showed that today. Our ladies held themselves well and played their game. It was just unfortunate that we got a goal disallowed early in the game. Our next game is against Valencia and it won’t be easy but we will try our best. They are at home and they will be tough indeed,” said Gladiators coach Jacqui Shipanga. Brave Gladiators: Rita Williams, Novata Paulus, Uerikondjera Kasaona, Juliana Skrywer, Ndapewa Katuta, Esther Amukwaya, Agnes Kauzuu, Veweziwa Kotjipati, Vistorine Shangula, Lorraine Jossop, Thomalina Adams, Zenatha Coleman, Anna Shikusho, Lovisa Mulunga, Eddelsisingh Naris, Annouscka Kordom, Memory Ngonda, Bernadette Dennis and Mellissa Matheus.
