Carel Olivier misses out on semifinal berth at youth games
2015-09-09Staff Report 2 Windhoek Namibia’s upcoming lawn bowls ace Carel Olivier yesterday narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot at the Commonwealth Youth Games, underway on the Pacific Island of Samoa. Olivier had raised the hope of a huge surprise following a sequence of strong results in the B category of the group phase, including victories over Scotland (21:7), India (21:9) and Samoa (21:16). However, defeats against Northern Ireland (10:21) and Malaysia (9:21) meant the youngster could only finish 3rd in the group, equal on points with Northern Ireland, but with a slightly weaker points difference (-9) – thus missing out on a place among the best four of the games. “I want to thank all the people back home for the help they gave me,” a disappointed Olivier said in an interview with the Namibian Bowling Association (NBA). Meanwhile, the Namibian swimmers manufactured some promising results, with Zanre Oberholzer claiming 6th (1:04.59) in the 100m backstroke final. Lushano Lamprecht with an 8th place finish in the same discipline over the same distance (1:00.55), added to the points tally. Oberholzer also finished 9th in the 50m backstroke final (30.61), while Lamprecht enjoyed another good result, finishing 10th (26.31) in the 50m butterfly, while Sonja Adelaar finished 11th overall in the same race (29.36). In the track and field events, high jumper Vizamuje Ujaha ended 11th overall after clearing 1.93m with his best jump of the day. Victory went to Tejaswin Shankar of India, with Sri Lanka’s Roshan Dammika Ranatunga Ranatungage (2.11m) and Lashane Wilson of Jamaica having to settle for 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. The global showpiece has attracted around 1 000 athletes from Commonwealth nations, ranging between the ages of 14 and 18 from all around the world, grilling each other in various sporting disciplines with action taking place in the Samoan capital, Apia. The competition includes aquatics (swimming), archery, athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rugby Sevens, squash, tennis and weightlifting. 2015-09-09Staff Report 2
