Cavema fishing setting global standards

Cavema Fishing is positioning itself to become a force to be reckoned with within the striving Namibian mid-water fishing industry.

Cavema Fishing (Pty) Ltd was created as a joint venture in 2013 between two Namibian quota holders, namely Camoposatu Investment (Pty)Ltd and Vernier Investments (Pty) Ltd, in an effort to optimise efficiencies and fishing capacity through the pooling of quota resources, together with other shareholders namely, Mare Fishing (Pty) Ltd and High Seas (Pty) Ltd.

Cavema Fishing (Pty) Ltd is a Namibian company, with Namibians as beneficial owners.

The shareholding structure of the company also reflects a Namibian beneficial ownership, which is in line with the national drive for industry Namibianisation and demonstrates commitment towards empowering previously disadvantaged Namibians.

The board composition of Cavema Fishing (Pty) Ltd comprises of diverse individuals with different skills set and experience. 

Strong corporate governance culture is present thus ensuring accountability, transparency and compliance.

Cavema Fishing is fully committed to broadening the participation of Namibians in the Namibian fishing industry this are creating more opportunities for Namibians.

Many indirect jobs are created by the fishing, processing, and marketing operations of Cavema Fishing under the “OSHONGO AND VECAMAR” brand. 

Camoposatu & Vernier are also involved in fishing, processing, and marketing activities in the Namibian mid-water fishery as well as on the Onshore Processing of Horse Mackerel and regional development for food security, value addition, employment creation, promoting of fish consumption at affordable prices via Oshakati Cold Storage and social economic contributions.

The commercial fishing is done by factory freezer trawlers “MFV Cavema Star” while the final product is discharged and distributed via cold storage facilities in the port of Walvis Bay.

The vessel is under Namibian flag, NSI certified and INSB class.

In 2016, the “Cavema Star” (ex “Flipper 9”) was modernized and refitted to ammonia-based freezing equipment, dramatically reducing her carbon footprint and emissions of greenhouse gases. As a result, it is the only Midwater trawler in Namibia working on ammonia-based refrigeration equipment.

Cavema is also conscious of the socio-economic needs of the societies they operate in. The company’s extensive social responsibility programme is a testament to their dedication and commitment to make a difference.

“Social transformation is a very prominent pillar of the development efforts of the Namibian government. Cavema Fishing (Pty) Ltd contributes its share through advancement of previously disadvantaged persons thus trying to address the socioeconomic inequalities of the past,” the company states.

Such advancement is embodied in various areas of the company operations. Empowerment through beneficial shareholding and advancement through management and board participation is one such area. Employment and human resources development is yet another means of contributing. Initiatives undertaken under the corporate social responsibility programme also drive advancement of previously disadvantaged persons in our community.
