Chief Justice calls for renewal of commitment
Keetmanshoop Chief Justice Peter Shivute has called on personnel in the judiciary to renew their commitment to delivering excellent service to the Namibian people. Addressing magistrates, prosecutors, clerks and other staff members of the newly established judiciary office at the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday, he called for a re-energized team with the collective aim of delivering justice. He explained that his visit was to introduce himself to the personnel of the regional office, share information on matters of common interest and familiarize himself with the activities in the region. He also highlighted the changes that came into effect after the third Constitutional Amendment Bill was passed and gazetted in October last year, saying the new law makes provision for an Office of the Judiciary, which is independent of the Ministry of Justice. However, he noted that although individual roles should be respected, more emphasis should be placed on working together. “It’s important that you work as a team – if you pull in different directions the clients will always suffer,” stressed the chief justice. Shivute indicated the importance of speedy and timely justice, noting that the changes were necessitated by the need to improve the justice system as the old system did not keep up with the independence of the judiciary. //Karas Regional Governor Lucia Basson who also attended the meeting with the judiciary staff briefly encouraged staff members to feel free and express themselves on the problems and any challenges they face, and to share any relevant information. The amendment Act promulgated on October 13 2014 gives constitutional recognition to the chief justice as the head of the judiciary, separate from the Ministry of Justice. The Office of the Judiciary is responsible for the supervision of the judiciary, exercises responsibilities over the judiciary and monitors the norms and standards for the exercise of the judicial functions of all courts. His visit of the Hardap Region continues as he proceeds to Karasburg, Lüderitz, Bethanie and then to Mariental.
