Club House Gossip
African Stars Having collected a one point pittance from a possible nine in their last three league outings, MTC Premiership champions African Stars’ mentor Bobby Samaria is under mounting pressure to arrest the current slump. The Reds suffered back to back defeats against title rivals Tigers and Black Africa respectively and, to compound matters, were held to an uninspiring goalless draw by bottom club Flamingoes and now trail log leaders Tigers by 6 points. Black Africa Out of contract Brave Warriors veteran defender Ananias Junior Gebhardt is yet to agree new terms for an improved contract with the Gemengde outfit, following the expiry of his contract with the club at the end of last season. Reliable defender Denzil “Seun” Haoseb has a made a quicker than expected recovery from a scary head injury and has been given the all clear by the club’s medical staff. Blue Waters Internal wrangles that led to the Birds parting ways with head coach Gerald Guther after seven rounds of matches, following a string of poor results, are haunting the coastal giants. The Birds enjoyed mixed fortunes in last weekend’s action and were heavily brought down to mother gravity by the fast-improved Mighty Gunners, who saw off their visitors 2-0. Nonetheless, the seasiders managed to pull themselves together claiming a comprehensive 3-0 home win over fellow league strugglers Citizens. Citizens After a somewhat sluggish start to their league campaign by their own standards, the Citizens seem to have finally found the kind of form that made them giant killers in their debut season. The Citizens slowly moved away from the relegation zone with victory over the visiting Eleven Arrows to slightly pull them away from the danger zone. Civics The Civilians seem to be a cursed institution, as the dreaded word ‘Death” and the club appear to have a lot in common. The bad-luck stricken Khomasdal outfit mourns the loss of another club stalwart following the sudden death of former fullback Franklin Piele April. The tall defender succumbed to a chest infection shortly after having participated in a social football match. Piele played a pivotal role during the Civilians’ reign as one of the most exciting sides in the business in recent years and was also a valuable member of the Brave Warriors squad that competed in the 26th edition of the biannual AFCON Cup in Ghana in 2008. The Civilians have in recent years lost a significant number of their most outstanding playing personnel to death. The departed members include Richard Ventura, Scural “Ralla” Klaaste, Victor Helu, Rex English, Pekara Kaaheke, Deon Brookes, Patrick Jaegger, Lucas “Shoes” Orr, Mentos Hipondoka. Eleven Arrows Despite being one the most outstanding performers for the Brave Warriors in recent internationals, former Arrows defender Chris Katjiukua is yet to feature for his South African Professional Soccer League (PSL) club Lamontville Golden Arrows since the start of the current term. Flamingoes The large birds from the Oanob Dam, near Rehoboth, are skating dangerously at the bottom of the MTC Premiership log standings and are the only team without a single win after nine rounds of matches – holding the wooden spoon with a paltry 5 points – courtesy of five draws. Julinho Perched 2nd from the basement with a worrisome paltry tally of six points from a possible 27 should be a serious cause of concern for ambitious club owner Nelson Louis. Mighty Gunners The men in camouflage uniform have been bolstered by successive wins in last weekend’s action and currently sit comfortably in 5th place after nine rounds of matches. The soldiers have assembled one of the finest squads in the business and will be a major force to be reckoned with this season, notably when playing at home at the “House of Pain,” the notorious Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo. Orlando Pirates The Ghosts have finally found their rhythm and are back to where they rightly belong, in the top four bracket. After an uncharacteristic slow start by their own standards, Ali “Mr Fix It” Akan’s Buccaneers have slowly lifted themselves but face an insurmountable task to challenge for the elusive league title with a mountainous 8 points off the summit. Rundu Chiefs After guiding the Brave Warriors to victory over Gambia in a mid-week clash in the 2018 Africa Zone FIFA World Cup qualifier – midfielder Petrus “Dancing Shoes” Shitembi returned to club action but could not help his NFD side Amazulu to victory as Usuthu lost 2-1 against FC Cape Town in last weekend’s league action. Tigers Beware! Ingwe is back with a bang and roaring like wounded Tigers. Brian Isaacs’ charges remain the only unbeaten side in the 16-team MTC Premiership and back to back wins over title rivals African Stars and Black Africa have doubtlessly confirmed their title credentials. The general belief among football pundits is that Tigers are currently playing the best football in the country’s topflight league and this can be accredited to the innovative midfield play of slippery midfielder Image Izaaks. Towering defender Dudes Mwedihanga’s solid start to his new career at Amatuks has seen the Brave Warriors beanpole centre back nail down a starting berth with the PSL outfit and has been a regular since moving from Amazulu at the start of the season. Tura Magic Pressure is mounting on new coach Paulus “Wire” Shipanga to galvanize the Magicians back into their usual swing. The ambitious Katutura outfit has been finding results hard to come by and has been unable to get out of first gear. The team currently languishes dangerously at the wrong end of the MTC Premiership log table. Strangely, the Magicians are languishing in unfamiliar 12th position on the log table with 7 points to their credit, just a mere point above the relegation zone. Despite an impressive showing after coming on as a second half substitute, Brave Warriors’ fast galloping winger Pikes Shalulile was unable to transform his international form to club level. The speedy winger was on the losing side after his NFD side Highlands Park failed to negotiate their way past a resolute Cape Town All Stars - going down 1-0. United Stars The Rundu-based outfit appears to have finally shaken off the their usual tag of being regarded as relegation fodder. A great start to their league campaign has guided the north-east campaigners to a respectable 6th place on the log table. Young Chiefs Barring a miracle, the league new boys are a sure bet for a quicker than expected retreat to familiar territory – come next season. With one single victory to their credit, Chiefs need to start collecting points at home if they are to live another day in the sunshine of the country’s flagship league.
