Coetzee wins Bass Angling championship
Windhoek The Namibia Bass Angling Association (NBAA) recently hosted the Bank Windhoek National Championships at Lake Oanob. Thursday was set aside as a practice day and the anglers could go out onto the water to identify areas in which they would be able to catch fish during the two official competition days. The NBAA is extremely conservation-conscious and for this reason certain areas of the dam were closed off. This time of year the fish spawn and the NBAA wanted to ensure that some fish were left alone to continue with their spawning, which in turn will ensure that the fish will be able to flourish for many years to come. Friday the 9th dawned and all anglers were ready for angling. The anglers knew that the fishing was going to be tough, as it has been all year long with the low water levels. The pull-away draw started at 07h00 and the anglers set off in all directions. The biggest fish of the event was caught by Alec Williams, weighing in at 3.236kg. Fishing proved to be extremely tough, with no anglers managing to catch a limit, but even in the tough conditions some big fish made it to the scales. All of the above-mentioned anglers knew they all stood a chance to be crowned Bank Windhoek national champion and the pressure was on them to perform well on Day 2. On the day all the boats and anglers were on their spots by 07h15. The fishing once again proved to be tough. The Florida strain bass, found in Oanob, are very sensitive and do not respond well to lots of boat traffic and fishing pressure. The anglers stuck it out though and some anglers managed to catch some good fish. The scales closed at 16h00 and everybody was eager to find out who would be crowned Bank Windhoek National Champion for 2015. The NBAA also applauded Bank Windhoek for sponsoring the event for the umpteenth time, adding that without Bank Windhoek’s support the event would not have been possible.
