College of the Arts Celebrates 20 years
By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The College of the Arts is celebrating its 20th year of combined arts in the familiar historical building complex in Fidel Castro Street. The institution was established in 1971 as the State Conservatoire of music. Today COTA is in a position to present arts education not only in Classical Music but also in modern music, dance, theatre, visual act and media arts technology on primary, secondary and tertiary level. COTA also presents arts education at 17 different centres in the regions. This makes the institution the biggest and most extensive arts educational institution in the country. As part of the celebrations a concert series was held this week and end today. A student music concert was presented on Tuesday night, featuring both classical and modern music. On Wednesday night the College Concert Hall was booked out with music enthusiasts who were treated to an excellent programme of mostly classical music. The event was the gala lecturers' Concert, where the lecturers of the College of the Arts provided high-quality perfomances as soloists and part of ensembles of a variety of formats and combinations to satisfy the connoisseur ears. An African Performance Night will be hosted on Tuesday evening, with the ATKV Applous Choir Competition on Friday night. Five choirs, including choirs from Keetmans and Swakopmund, will compete against one another. An arts exhibition by students of the Arts departments is currently running in the foyer of the Main Campus.
