Collin Benjamin in surprise Bundesliga return
WINDHOEK – Namibia’s most decorated professional footballer, Collin Benjamin, is back in the highly competitive German second-tier division. The former Civics forward was promoted to keep a close eye on Munich 1860’s second strings. Benjamin and head coach Torsten Frohling were both elevated from assistant and head coaches, of 1860’s regional league campaigners (U/21’s). The pair will serve in the same portfolios with the team’s reserves until further notice. Collymore, as Benjamin is affectionately known among his circle of friends in his native land, left Namibia as a raw but highly talented youngster in 2000. He had stints with German lower division sides before he was snapped up by Bundesliga giants Hamburg FC. Arguably Namibia’s longest-serving professional footballer, Benjamin has represented Hamburg in the coveted European Champions League rubbing shoulders with some of the finest footballers on the world stage, including the legendary Thierry Henry. He captained the Brave Warriors on several occasions, both in the regional Cosafa Cup, Fifa World cup qualifiers and was a valuable squad member of the Warriors team that narrowly lost 1-0 to hosts Ghana in the CAF Afcon in 2008.
