Combating teenage pregnancy with dance
Windhoek Ombetja Yehinga Organisation Trust (OYO) has launched its dance troupe’s main theme for this year: Teenage Pregnancy. Director of OYO Philippe Talavera says they are creating social awareness using the arts with the support of the Global Fund, Horizon and hopefully other partners. “We will support the policy of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to prevent teenage pregnancy in schools, while supporting young girls who have fallen pregnant,” says Talavera, adding that sustaining a dance troupe in Namibia is not easy, but it is also not impossible and they are celebrating it. “Our dances are not just dance. They give a message. In 2015, we organised 292 shows, reaching 107 177 people. That is worth celebrating,” he notes. Talavera adds that they will also embark on a project ‘San Matter’ with the Finnish Embassy. With the ‘San Matter’ project they will encourage San children who are enrolled in school to finish their schooling. “We will promote in schools in the Ohangwena and Omaheke regions a culture of tolerance and encourage schools to be San-friendly,” he says, adding that with the support of the German Embassy their third big project will take place in jails where they will implement an exciting project with inmates. “It is a more sensitive project, so you might hear less about it. However, we are hopeful it will have a great impact on the lives of inmates,” says Talavera. At the launch they performed ‘Teacher’, their new pieces on teenage pregnancy.
