Cop seriously hurt in hit-and-run
A female police officer was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident yesterday evening while on duty in Walvis Bay. The officer who was hit by a suspected drunk female driver was flown by helicopter yesterday evening to Windhoek to receive emergency medical attention. According to the crime inevestigations coordinator of the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, the suspect whose name was withheld pending her first court appearance allegedly approached the roadblock just outside Walvis Bay  where the female police officer was stationed on Sunday. The suspect allegedly hit the officer while she was carrying out her duties and she failed to stop or ascertain the injuries the officer sustained. However other officers who witnessed the incident followed and arrested her.  She was then taken to the Walvis Bay State Hospital to have a blood sample taken. “Not only did she appear to have been under the influence of alcohol, but it is normal procedure to have a blood sample taken in the case of an accident,” stated the deputy commissioner. Kashuupulwa said the suspect allegedly refused to have her blood sample taken and was locked up immediately on Sunday evening. She was expected to make her first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Kashuupulwa says the police officer sustained serious injuries  which included a broken leg and arm among others. “The injuries are too many and we just had to take her to Windhoek for further medical attention,” said the regional crime investigations coordinator.
