Cop shoots girlfriend, commits suicide
OSHAKATI – A sergeant in the Special Reserve Unit of the Namibian Police Force shot his girlfriend to death and then himself in the head in the early hours of Friday at Oshakati. Acting regional police commander for the Oshana Region, Deputy Commissioner Rauha Amwele, identified the deceased police officer as 49-year-old Jop Hangula and the girlfriend as 42-year-old Niita Beata Endjala. Hangula shot his girlfriend with his 9mm service pistol. The incident took place in Hangula’s bedroom at the Oniimwandi NamPol base in Oshakati East. The reason for this double murder remains unknown as no suicide note was found on the scene. The two have been dating for the last 10 years. Eyewitnesses said Hangula arrived at the room he shared with another police officer in the Okave Police Barracks with his girlfriend last Thursday night, and asked his roommate to find another place to spend the night. “ When the roommate came back that Friday morning there was no response despite having knocked several times,” eyewitnesses said. After knocking several times, with no response, the roommate peeped through the window and saw both bodies lying on the floor while their cellphones were on the bed. This is the second killing of a woman by her boyfriend in northern Namibia within two days. Last Wednesday night, a man stabbed his 33-year-old girlfriend Anna-Lisa Tuunane Ndakongele and tried to commit suicide thereafter by slitting his own throat with a knife. Ndakongele died later from the 20 wounds inflicted on her body. The man is in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital. – Additional reporting by Nampa
