Cops Puzzled By Mysterious Fissures
"By Anna Ingwafa OKAMUKWA Oshana Police are puzzled by the discovery two days ago of strange fissures on the earth's surface at Okamukwa village in Endola Constituency. The cracks are the more puzzling in that the area where they were discovered did not experience any earth tremors. Oshana Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, who visited the scene explained that villagers did not notice the cracks that appeared in one of the homesteads. Cracks believed to have resulted possibly from severe floods that hit the region earlier this year cover a distance of almost a kilometre with a depth of close to 60 cm. Geological surveyors have not yet verified the odd discovery to determine its cause. According to Kashihakumwa, the police have communicated the discovery to the line ministry to investigate the cause of the cracks. ""It is the first time to come across such phenomenon and it is worth being investigated,"" said Kashihakumwa. The police made the discovery after they gave chase to a suspect who ran away after he reportedly assaulted his mother following a domestic row. It is alleged that the suspect beat his mother severely and later tried to commit suicide by hanging himself on a nearby tree, using palm leaves. Failed by the leaves after they broke, he tried to run away. The police caught up with him after the suspect's older sister alerted them. The man, aged 30, appeared before the Oshakati Magistrate's Court yesterday. The mother is hospitalised at Oshakati State Hospital. It is alleged that the suspect beat up his mother over money and food, said the police. "
