Dahlia FC wins Franklin April Top-8 tourney
Windhoek In a befitting tribute to their fallen leader, Dahlia FC on Saturday won the inaugural Franklin April Top-8 Tournament after beating Aweh Aweh FC 4-3 on penalty shootouts. The two sides drew 2-2 in regulation time, forcing the match to be decided on penalties. The late Franklin April, known to his fans as ‘Die Groot 6’, was a Dahlia FC player in the Thru Pass Sunday League and also featured for the national senior football team, the Brave Warriors. He passed away last month and the tournament was thus dedicated to and christened after him. His family, children, friends and former Civics teammates flocked to the Concordia Secondary School stadium in the capital to witness first-hand as Dahlia FC slugged it out against a star-studded Aweh Aweh outfit that consisted mainly of former NPL players. The Top 8 final brought to a close the Sunday League’s proceedings for this year. The league will resume again on January 31 2016 with the continuation of the second leg of the 12-team Thru Pass Sunday League.
