Dark Cloud Hangs over Figge

By Carlos Kambaekwa WINDHOEK A dark cloud is hovering over the credibility of newly appointed Technical Director of the Namibian Football Association (NFA) one Jochen Figge. The highly recommended German national is set to take over from Seth "Mataba" Boois after the likeable Boois tendered his resignation late last year. However, all the hype that greeted news of Figge's arrival has all of a sudden gone up in smoke after it emerged that the much travelled 61-year-old mentor allegedly inflated his curriculum vitae when applying for the position of head coach for both the senior and Olympic football teams of Ethiopia. Figge took charge of the Ethiopian senior soccer team in 2002 with the mandate to take the continental perennial under-achievers to the 24th edition of the African Cup of Nations finals hosted by Tunisia in 2004. Despite having steered the Ethiopians to 2nd place halfway through the qualifying group stage, that included Guinea, Liberia and Niger, Figge was shown the door for his apparent failure to furnish the Ethiopian football authorities with the necessary documents needed to support his application for the post of head coach. The incoming NFA technical director boasts a stretching CV, which includes several coaching stints with Botswana, Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Zambia, Eritrea, Egypt, Mozambique and Nepal. Beyond the borders of the African continent he also coached the national teams of Trinidad & Tobago and Nepal, and was also attached to the German and Romanian football associations in the capacity of coach and instructor.
