2015-07-01Staff Report 2 Windhoek U.S. Ambassador to Namibia Thomas Daughton recently visited the Toivo ya Toivo Pre-Primary and Daycare in Havana to see how American donor funds are being spent. The U.S government through the U.S. President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief provides funding to the centre. Between 2010 and 2015, the U.S. government provided over U$3 million in grants to the Church Alliance for Orphans (CAFO), a project that works with community-based resources to address the needs of Namibia’s most vulnerable and orphans. The U.S. President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funds were funneled to the centre through CAFO. Daughton had the opportunity to observe lots of activities, such as children learning the importance of washing their hands, and he noted the day-care facility was recently cleaned and the building brightly painted. He said: “One of the things the U.S. government does in Namibia is work with civil society to empower Namibians to find Namibian solutions to Namibian challenges.” CAFO met that ambitious target and based on its success the Americans provided an additional U$500 000 in 2013.
