Davies foresees a different Welwitschias at 2015 World Cup
Windhoek Ahead of this weekend’s clash against the visiting Russians, newly appointed Welwitschias mentor Phil Davies yesterday outlined his long-term plans for the national senior team, as well as his desire to take Namibian rugby to greater heights. Drawing inspiration from the last couple of months’ challenges and achievements, Davies is convinced Namibia has the potential to make a huge impact at this year’s International Rugby Board (IRB) World Cup in England. “We have had our fair share of challenges but have also enjoyed immense progress over the past few months. Our overall plan is to build on that progress heading to the World Cup. We have put a lot of work into the team, especially with our juniors, and the results of our hard work were evident in Saturday’s win over Russia,” said the Welsh national during yesterday’s press conference in the capital. “Going forward, our objective is to blend the squad together as it is currently a mixture of local and foreign-based players – so we have to work hard until we reach a point where we will be fully satisfied as a team.” As for the second match in the Windhoek Draught Friendship Test Series against Russia at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday, Davies remains adamant his charges will duplicate last weekend’s performance, which saw the team gain a convincing 39-19 victory. “We have no injury concerns at the moment and the mood in the camp is positive. The boys are ready to go. It’s not going to be an easy assignment as the Russians will be coming full out at us but we are equally ready to take the game to them and hopefully get the desired results.”
