De Wit bridge murder accused gets new lawyer
2015-06-22Staff Report 2 Windhoek A resident of Windhoek, Willem Titus Keffs, who is accused of murdering and robbing his common-law wife near the Simon De Wit Bridge, has been allocated the services of Christian Nambahu after his previous Legal Aid lawyer, Chris Visser, withdrew from the case. During a pervious pre-trial hearing, Deputy Prosecutor General Antonia Verhoef informed the court that the previous lawyer told her that Legal Aid was aware of his withdrawal and was in the process of appointing another lawyer for Keffs. An official for Legal Aid, who was in court, then informed Judge Ndauendapo that they knew nothing of the withdrawal and undertook to look into the matter. The issue has now been resolved and Nambahu informed Judge President Petrus Damaseb that he was only recently appointed and asked for a postponement to give him a chance to consult with his client. Damaseb postponed the matter to July 23 for the defence to reply to the State’s pre-trial memorandum. Keffs is facing charges of murder read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act and robbery with aggravating circumstances also under the Combating of Domestic Violence Act. He is accused of fatally stabbing his common-law wife, Antoinette April, with a screwdriver near the Simon de Witt Bridge in Windhoek North in 2012. It is also alleged that he robbed the deceased of a blue denim handbag, a wristwatch, a Nokia cellphone and jewellery (rings and neck chains). Passers-by found April’s lifeless body on March 1, 2012, in the bushes near the bridge. At the time, it was reported that April was on her way to work when Keffs apparently followed her and an argument broke out leading to the stabbing. According to the indictment, Keffs stabbed the deceased several times on the body and she died as a result of the stabbings. Keffs was arrested the next day and has been in custody since his arrest. 2015-06-22Staff Report 2
