Defamation Case Remanded to September
"By Anna Shilongo WINDHOEK Judge Collins Parker last Friday remanded to September the case in which former Secretary-General of the National Youth Council (NYC) and Deputy Minister Pohamba Shifeta is suing New Era for N$500 000 for alleged defamation of character. The court case follows an article with the headline ""Pohamba Shifeta Under Scrutiny"" carried by New Era on June 08 2006. Last Friday, Judge Parker remanded the case to September 22-26 for hearing. More witnesses are expected to testify when the case resumes in September. Senior accountant in the National Youth Council, Julius Namoloh, was the last in the witness box. Shifeta who is now the Deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture is suing New Era for carrying an article he believes had tarnished his reputation. He says his dignity and rights were violated when the newspaper carried an article which stated that he was being investigated by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NYC for financial irregularities incurred during his term of office at the NYC. He says as a result of the article his reputation, human rights and dignity were violated. Dirk Conradie represented Shifeta while Senior Counsel Dave Smuts is representing New Era. "
