Detained Kandjii in police car accident

Former Swapo councillor and parliamentarian Ambrosius Kandjii, who has been held at the Witvlei police station for allegedly violating a protection order and malicious damage to property, sustained minor injuries during an accident involving a police van while being transported for his next court hearing on Sunday afternoon.

According to Khomas crime investigations coordinator Kornelius Kupombwena, the incident occurred in Windhoek.

He said Kandjii suffered minor injuries together with two police officers after a motor-vehicle with number plate GRN 18412 was travelling from the northern to the southern direction along Robert Mugabe Avenue.

“In the process, it bumped a black BMW X5 with number plate N29737W which was travelling from east to west along John Meinert Street, as it had right of way. The BMW went to bump POL 8237, which was stationary in Robert Mugabe Avenue, facing the northern direction and waiting for the robot to turn green. The GRN vehicle that caused the accident fled the scene,” said Kupombwena.

The accident occurred at the intersection of John Meinert Street and Robert Mugabe Avenue.

He said the police are now looking for the unidentified driver who fled the scene with the GRN vehicle.

The police said Kandjii, the former Katutura Central constituency councillor, was arrested in December last year at Aminuis in the Omaheke region for allegedly violating a protection order. The court order was at the request of his wife.

The 49-year-old former National Council member’s first court appearance was on 31 December, and he was remanded in custody until his next appearance on 11 February. He was then again remanded in custody, and was expected to appear on Monday this week.

In an unrelated incident, Kandjii spent a weekend in the police cells in April last year after he was arrested for allegedly physically assaulting a woman and pointing a firearm at her at his house in Windhoek, Katutura.

At that time, police said Kandjii was arrested after the woman opened a criminal case against him, claiming he had punched her in the face and pointed a firearm at her.

It is alleged that a 31-year-old woman went to Kandjii’s house to seek his assistance to be registered for the emergency income grant (EIG) after her first application was rejected for previously being a taxpayer.

The EIG was a once-off N$750 provision by the government to cushion the impact of Covid-19 on the less fortunate. However, an argument broke out, allegedly resulting in Kandjii punching the woman in the face and later pointing a gun at her.

At the same time last year, the accused was also facing prosecution for another assault incident that took place on the same day. It is alleged that he maliciously damaged the bonnet and windscreen of a car of a 26-year-old man who was in the company of the woman. He is further alleged to have assaulted him as well.

However, charges of the alleged assault on the 31-year-old woman against Kandjii were later withdrawn after the court could not locate his docket.
