OSHIKUKU- The Deputy Regional Commander for Oshana, Deputy Commissioner Rauha Amwele, has urged police officers at the Oshikuku sub-station to demonstrate high discipline and commitment.

She said the police should be professional in their conduct as guided by the Police Act of 1990.

“Please keep up the good discipline and respect, continue serving your community and render all you can in terms of effective and efficient service all the time.  Demonstrate high discipline, commitment and professionalism wherever you are,” said Amwele.

Amwele made the remarks at the official handover of the Oshikuku sub-station to the Omusati Police Station, which has been operating under the Oshana Police since the establishment of the Omusati Police Region in 2001.

She said the handover was in line with the directive of the Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Sebastian Ndeitunga, to align police regions with the political demarcations.

Amwele further noted the moving of the Oshikuku sub-station is a just a formality and ensured the Omusati Police that the Oshana Police would continue to render assistance to ensure that peace and stability are maintained in a town whose crimes are instigated by alcohol abuse and the high unemployment rate, particularly among youth.

“Housebreaking and theft are mainly caused by the high unemployment rate especially amongst the youth and this crime is also committed for financial gain.  Assault is mainly caused by alcohol abuse,” noted the deputy regional commander.

Also speaking at the handover, the Deputy Regional Commander, Willem Steenkamp, said although            there is a change in policing boundaries, the police and community of Oshikuku should continue to work together to prevent and root out crime.

The Oshikuku Police Station, which initially operated in a caravan, now operates from a building donated by constructor Andreas Prestorius.
