Donate a book this festive

The Young Leaders’ Mentorship Programme (YLMP) in partnership with passenger transportation service, LEFA, are encouraging people to donate books in the spirit of spreading the joy of reading and ensuring accessibility of books to children.

The YLMP was founded by three black females in the legal fraternity, namely Vicky Kapuka, Taimi Iileka-Amupanda and Julia Gideon.

It formally commenced operations in 2020 to provide young individuals with guidance from professionals in various fields, and to assist them in making sound and structural career decisions.

“We believe that together we can build a reading culture. We are therefore pleading to our communities to assist in making this project a success by donating a book, a voucher or some coins, with the sole aim of promoting a reading culture. Gift a Namibian child this festive season,” pleaded Gideon.

The project further wants to prioritise child education in literacy and empower the Namibian children in less-privileged communities. The schools to receive the donations are still to be identified, but will be made public for purposes of transparency.

“Without the ability to read, it would not be possible for communities to gain the knowledge and skills that are critical in achieving Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which is Quality Education,” stated Gideon.

The trio said they are aware that several Namibian children, unfortunately, cannot explore the wonders that await them within the written word, most especially those in less-privileged communities.

Gideon said the programme aims to develop an intellectual and semi-social network between mentors and mentees, by providing various platforms through which the former can provide the latter with guidance and advice on career development through motivation and inspiration.
