2016-03-11Staff Report 2 While one is obliged to commend and applaud Brave Warriors coach Bucksy Mannetti for his bold decision to drop prominent but inactive Warriors playing personnel from his provisional 27-member squad, yours truly is not entirely at ease with the resolution, for various reasons. This practice has been trumpeted for quite a long time and this writer, for one, has always advocated that such measures should be observed, but the bone of contention in this regard is the principle of fairness, honesty and above all, consistency. Period! Yours truly is not entirely convinced that the shocking omission of Namibia’s most accomplished midfielder and one of the best performers during the country’s historic triumph in the COSAFA Cup last year, has anything to do with his apparent disputed match fitness, just because he is not a regular starter for his PSL outfit Bidvest Wits University. Being a young man and coming from an amateur set-up, Gome was always going to find the going tough in breaking into his new club’s starting line-up and has been left to bide his time on the substitutes’ bench, with sporadic cameo roles as a late substitute. Fair enough, Brave Warriors inspirational skipper Stigga Ketjijere is currently entangled in a similar situation, and should the trend continue would the technical stuff also follow suit, be brave enough and drop its most trusted lieutenant from the squad? I’m just asking. The fact that he is regularly training at such high-level intensity and is constantly involved in competitive friendly games should have given him the benefit of the doubt. The bottom line is that rules are there to be twisted and modified as the situation demands. They are man-made and not cast in iron. Grounding the player in his time of need, on the assumption that he is not getting enough game time at his professional club (Bidvest Wits), is a grave error of judgment and could potentially disarm the player’s current fragile confidence. In my opinion, the decision constitutes a miscarriage of justice. Yours truly would humbly like to urge my trusted and learned colleagues, the Brave Warriors technical staff, to rethink their decision and recall our most influential player, Wangu ‘the Bullterrier’.
