Double murder accused dies in hospital
Windhoek Ananias Kamati, 32, the Augustineum Senior Secondary School teacher accused of killing two sisters in Windhoek about two weeks ago died in hospital yesterday, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi has confirmed. Kamati was in the Katutura hospital receiving treatment after he allegedly drank battery acid in an attempt to end his life. He was first in the intensive care unit (ICU) but was moved to a different ward. The Otjiherero language teacher was charged with the murder of Jacqueline Panna Kuaseua – his student until her death – and her elder sister Cecilia Kuaseua. Jacqueline and Kamati were reportedly in a relationship. Kamati was allegedly stalking Jacqueline after she ended their relationship a month ago and reportedly started dating a fellow learner. The bodies of the two deceased women were found in the bush behind Elim Primary School in Khomasdal at about 15h30 on October 9. His matter was due to appear in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on November 2, after it was remanded in his absence this week because he was still in hospital. Jacqueline was stabbed twice – in the chest and head – while her older sister also suffered multiple stab wounds. Kamati had left behind a suicide note, but survived the attempt to kill himself. The content of the suicide note has not been disclosed. Cecilia had accompanied her younger sister to the school on the Friday of the double killing after Kamati had grabbed Jacqueline’s cellphone earlier that day, just after the 18-year-old learner had finished writing her examinations. It was reported Kamati promised to take the sisters to the place he had left the cellphone and it was on their way there that he attacked them in the riverbed. Kanguatjivi previously informed New Era the police caught Kamati while he was drinking battery acid in his room. On Facebook, a user commented: “Cause of death? Autopsy pls. Just a pity he went without telling the nation what drove him to commit the crime.” Another said: “Too bad ... Hand everything in God’s hands.’” After the murders, the Education, Arts and Culture Minister Katrina Hanse-Himarwa revealed that the ministry recorded 27 cases of teacher-learner relationships in 2014 alone. In June while addressing thousands of teachers from all over the Omusati Region, Hanse-Himarwa said that nowadays not only male teachers are indulging in sexual relations with learners but also female teachers, especially the younger ones, who are pursuing schoolboys. “Stop the practice of sugar daddies and sugar mummies or ‘gogoism’ as it is now known. I know nowadays teachers are graduating from university when they are 23 or 24 and some of the boys in school are also of the same age. When they pursue you tell them that they are just boys and they need to finish school,” she told teachers. The Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) also condemned relationships between teachers and learners. “We are indeed troubled to hear of teachers, who are involved sexually and emotionally with their learners and we strongly condemn this practice. Teachers, who are luring students into relationships must be dealt with and removed,” Ester Simon, Nanso secretary for gender and social welfare stated recently.
