Double netball titles for Windhoek Gymnasium
2015-03-05Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - Windhoek Gymnasium High School claimed double success in the first Bank Windhoek and Trustco United Netball Club Superfast Five netball tournament last Saturday. The school won the U15 and the U19 league titles with impressive margins proving they are a force to be reckoned with in Namibian junior netball. They beat Windhoek High School 11 -1 in the U15 league final and MK Gertze from Rehoboth 24 - 8 in the U19 league. The senior league was won by Plaza Babes who beat NamJam 13:9 in an action packed final that had spectators begging for more. In third place was the Blou Bokkies who defeated NamPower, who came in fourth. The games in the Superfast Five netball tournament were even shorter than a normal Fast 5 netball game, with only two halves of seven minutes each being played. In order to still accommodate the fan favourite power play, some minor adjustments were made to ensure that both teams had opportunities to double their scores in the last two minutes of the first half and the first two minutes of the second half. Only five players per team are allowed on the court in Fast 5 netball, with rolling substitutions being made at any stage of the game. This was the first competitive netball to be played for the season and offered teams an opportunity to test out combinations and evaluate the fitness of players. For a school like Moria Private School, all the way from Outjo, it also provided players the opportunity to experience a different format of netball from the one they are used to. According to Jack le Roux, the chairperson of Trustco United Netball Club, days like these can be considered a success if teams can walk off the court after a hard battle as friends. For the club it was also an ideal opportunity to gain a bit of exposure and showcase its assets close to its annual derby with Wanderers on March 7 and with its century of existence looming in 2016. The award for Best Senior Player went to Nanguloshi Kamutushi of NamJam, while Juzelri Garbers of Windhoek Gymnasium won the award for Best Junior Player. 2015-03-05Staff Report 2
