Drag Racers Roar at Tony Rust
"By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The Tony Rust Race track outside of Windhoek became a hive of activity with the sounds of drag racers last week. The track was pumping with more than 3 000 spectators and they were certainly offered the spectacle of a life time with each of them receiving a double-up casino voucher from the Windhoek Country Club's Jewel Casino. Porky Willemse from South Africa recorded the fastest time on the track in his Corvette. Afterwards, Willemse revealed his experience on Namibian soil saying it was aboslutely phenominal. ""Not only because of the racing but also the hospitality. My wife and I were sponsored by the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino and the Windhoek Motor Club and we were spoilt to the extreme. ""I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Windhoek Country Club for their sponsorship and their fantastic hospitality. We will definitely come back to Namibia because of the friendly reception and the fantastic organisation by the Windhoek Motor Club."" First to cross the line of the Namibian racers was Johan de Klerk in his 1983 Corolla 1.6!, which was built by Mike Lotter of Hops Racing Development - HRD. The second Namibian car, in terms of timing, was Jaco Kotze's Chevrolet Lumina followed by Erno de Villiers' Ford Fairmont and De Waal's Ford Fairlane which shared third place. Gerhard Visagie in a Ford Bakkie came in 4th with Louwrens van Rensburg in his Nissan Pulsar and Marco Smit in a Mitsubishi GTO in 5th and 6th places respectively. Marco Meyer with his Mustang finished under the top ten in a commedable 7th place. In the two wheels category, Richard Slammet on his Yamaha R1 motorbike was crowned '""King of the Beasts"". The Chairman of the Windhoek Motor Club Gerhard Visagie said the club will soon host a closed event, where the fastest Namibian cars will compete against one another so that the local dragsters can prove their mettle and showcase their capabilities. He further stated that the Windhoek Motor Club would like to see more entries in the two-wheels discipline in the next event.
