DTA donates N$5 000 to family of porridge poison victims
Windhoek The DTA of Namibia’s McHenry Venaani has donated N$5 000 to the family of the six people who are believed to have died of food poisoning. Nampa reported that five people and a dog died of suspected food poisoning last week, while another died this week. One person is reportedly still in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Oshakati State Hospital. It is believed that the porridge they consumed was accidentally poisoned. The children reportedly prepared porridge while their mothers were in the field ploughing. When they noticed that the porridge was too thin they decided to add the sediment of traditional beer, not knowing that it is a poisonous substance. “It’s a gesture that one is giving to a community in need,” said Venaani, noting that it is terrifying for a family to lose six members at the same time, and what’s worse, as a result of food poisoning. Venaani, who handed the funds to Nguzu Muharukua, the Epupa Constituency Councillor, said he and a DTA delegation would attend the burial. “I will make time out of my busy schedule to attend the burial as the family needs support of that magnitude,” Venaani said. He also called on other members of parliament and corporate titans to follow suit by making a donation to the bereaved family. The DTA maintains a strong political presence in the Epupa Constituency. The incident happened at Otjikondavirongo village in the Otjomuru area of Epupa Constituency.
