DTA executive to rule on Kanyetu suspension
Windhoek The official opposition will this coming weekend convene an indaba to decide whether or not it should lift the suspension of its secretary general, Vinsent Kanyetu, and two regional coordinators. DTA of Namibia chairperson Jennifer van den Heever confirmed this to New Era yesterday. She said the party’s disciplinary committee completed its investigations and subsequently submitted its findings to the DTA executive. “The executive committee will meet this weekend to make a decision. We already have the outcome of the disciplinary hearing but we must follow the correct procedures,” she said. Party sources have informed this newspaper that the executive will most likely lift the suspensions, which will pave the way for Kanyetu and the two coordinators to resume their duties. Van den Heever said the executive committee has the power to make a ruling which opposes the recommendations of the disciplinary committee. The trio appeared last month before the three-man disciplinary committee, which comprised of Moses Titus, Paul Tathaone and Ilme Schneider. Following Kanyetu’s suspension one of the party’s MPs, Elma Dienda, was appointed to act in his place. According to the charge sheet: “On or about 15 August 2013, the accused member undertook to sell/sold the party’s Rundu office, situated at Erf 1225, Rundu Extension 3 to a certain River View Estate CC (CC/2012/0380) without the express and/or implied consent, of the management committee, as required in terms of section 16.3.2 of the constitution.” Kanyetu also stands accused of channelling some of the funds from the land sale towards the payment of party debts in Gobabis. The charge sheet further claims: “The accused member (Kanyetu) has taken an amount of around N$10 000 from the proceeds of the sale for the undue advancement of his own personal affairs (without notifying or informing the management committee), thus misappropriating resources of the party and thereby defrauding and/or stealing from the party.” The party also suspended its regional coordinator for Kavango West, Boniface Kashera, and Kavango East coordinator Reinhilde Kudumo, after they too were implicated in the unsanctioned property sale. The trio pleaded their innocence to New Era during past interviews. Rundu Town Council records to which New Era is privy indicate that the DTA signed a deed of sale in 2013 to acquire the immovable property, measuring 1 379 square metres, for N$82 740. The payment is however still outstanding.
