Elderly pensioner praises Geingob
NKURENKURU - Edmund Nairenge, 73, from Nkurenkuru in Kavango West was full of praise for President Hage Geingob for thinking about the elderly by increasing their monthly grants. Nairenge joined the chorus of ululations that reverberated across the country after Geingob recently announced that government has increased old-age pension grants from N$600 to N$1 000. The retired teacher, who once taught Rukwangali at ELCIN Nkurenkuru High School on the southern outskirts of Nkurenkuru town, said the praise was not his alone, as other pensioners could also not contain their joy over the increase. “We were indeed humbled by the announcement made by our President and the Minister of Finance saying an extra N$400 will be added to our monthly pension grant and we, therefore, thank the President and his Cabinet. We know he did not take this decision all by himself, so we also thank his Cabinet for supporting this progressive decision,” stated Nairenge. Nairenge described the increase as a way to eradicate poverty, saying pensioners would be able to buy 50kg bags of maize meal and some meat. “We know other stories were written to praise him but we, the people of Nkurenkuru and Kavango West at large, also want to use this opportunity to thank the new President,” he said. Nairenge, who spoke on behalf of his fellow senior citizens, said the elders of Nkurenkuru are grateful for the extra N$400 added to their pension grant. “As pensioners, we also have a lot of responsibilities that require money. Now at least we can do more with our money, we can buy groceries and travel to clinics. When we heard the news, we rejoiced and thanked God for giving us this wonderful man, who entered his office with a surprise for us elders,” Nairenge said. Furthermore, Nairenge encouraged Geingob to solicit input from former presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba on some of the challenges facing the country at large. “He must also work with the Founding Father Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba, as they can still put heads together for the country’s benefit. And I also want to urge my fellow pensioners to not drink up all the money but let’s use it wisely to take care of ourselves and our grandchildren,” said the former schoolteacher.
