Employee theft and house break-ins on the rise
2016-12-12Staff Report 2 Windhoek It is increasingly common for employees to get caught stealing from their employers. Windhoek City Police officers are concerned by how often employees are involved in housebreak-ins and cases of theft at their places of employment. On Wednesday last week, four employees of CIC Holdings Limited allegedly stole goods from their company of an unknown value. It is alleged that goods were stolen from the company’s warehouses in the northern industrial area in the vicinity of Brakwater on two different occasions. The goods were later recovered by law enforcement officers and although they attempted to flee, three of four suspects weredetained and a case of theft opened. City Police spokesperson Superintendent Hileni Enza Wilhelm said although they have deployed numerous intervention strategies to counter this trend the police need the support of the wider business community to curb the scourge of theft by employees. “Therefore, the City Police Service urges the business community to engage us in strategic partnerships to curb the rise in business break-ins, “said Wilhelm. According to the police, several notable incidents occurred over the past week. In one instance a suspect attempted to rob an ATM at the University of Namibia at midnight. It is alleged that last Sunday (December 4) an unknown suspect tried to force open the door behind the ATM in an attempt to steal. The suspect fled the scene though when the alarm went off. So far no arrests have been made. Wilhelm reported that at about 17h43 on Monday a male suspect was arrested at Single Quarters Service station after he stole an electricity generator. The suspect is being detained at Katutura Police Station and the generator has been recovered. According to the City Police, during the festive season the number of housebreak-ins with intent to steal tend to rise, given that most properties in the capital are left empty as the owners tend to travel out of town for the holidays. 2016-12-12Staff Report 2
