2008-03-20Staff Report 2 "By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) has urged Christians in Namibia to make the necessary sacrifices to help people affected by the floods. ""We trust that Easter will become for them and us all a time of victory just as Jesus was victorious over death,"" said CCN Secretary General, Reverend Philip Strydom, yesterday. Due to the floods that have hit most parts of the north central regions, thousands of people have been left homeless and are accommodated at a secondary school, a stadium and at the trade fair grounds. Aggravating the situation is a cholera outbreak that has left three people dead. There are so far 455 suspected cases. Strydom said things were not right in people's personal lives as well as in the country considering the tremendous trauma that people are going through in the north, the increase in violence against women and children and alcohol abuse and poverty. He said Christians should use the Easter period to dedicate themselves to a life that is of high moral standards, work for peace, justice and reconciliation. He reminded them that Christians the world over at this time remember Jesus' life of dedication and commitment to the point of death. ""He did this for the salvation of mankind but especially for the sake of peace, justice and reconciliation,"" he said. ""Lent and Easter is a special time for Christians. It is a time when they contemplate on the sufferings and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, their Saviour,"" he added. Reverend Strydom noted that although lent was a time of soul-searching and repentance and a time for reflection and taking stock, little was known on how much soul-searching Christians were prepared to do.
