New traffic regulations On July 28, 2015 an amendment on the road safety regulations on Road Traffic and Transport waspublished in Government Gazette No 5792. In terms of these regulations all persons who transport paying passengers, must be older than 25 years and also be declared medically fit by a doctor. These include inter alia taxi drivers, bus drivers and tourguides. It is also compulsory that the lights of all vehicles on a trunk road, main road and district road must be switched on (also in daytime). Further amendments include that only six people may be transported in the goods department of a goods vehicle such as a bakkie of which the gross vehicle mass must be less than 3 500kg.The goods department must be enclosed with a running board of 350mm above the surface upon which persons are seated and 900mm for standing passengers. Passengers thus have to sit at all times on a bakkie unless the goods department is enclosed with railings. A further amendment is that the seatbelt of the vehicle must be installed according to South African national standards and must also comply with these standards. Instruments which measure the speed must also comply with South African national standards. Even though these regulations already came into force, motorists will be given sufficient time to get the necessary safety equipment and aquaint themselves with the new regulations.
