Another farmer nabbed with weapons
Windhoek Another farmer was recently arrested for possession of weapons without a permit. Willem Maritz, 60, from Hochfeld appeared in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges of threatening, pointing a firearm at his farm worker and possession of firearms and ammunition without any valid licence. Magistrate Khaeprimus Swartz presided. Hochfeld is a settlement 135km north-east of Okahandja. Detective Chief Inspector Naukalemo Andreas, the regional crime investigating coordinator for the Otjozondjupa Region, informed New Era on Tuesday that Maritz had allegedly threatened and pointed a firearm at his farm worker, who reported the matter to the Hochfeld police. Upon investigating the police found and confiscated a variety of firearms, including shotguns and assault rifles, and ammunition, Andreas said. Maritz was released on bail of N$4 000 and the matter was remanded to March 14 for further police investigations. Prosecutor Kinda Nangombe represented the State. At the beginning of this month, another commercial farmer in the same Hochfeld area was arrested and charged for the illegal possession of machine-guns, hand grenades and 10 000 rounds of ammunition at his farm near the Osire refugee resettlement farm. A charge of terrorism was added. The accused, Johannes Mostert, 53, is currently in custody. He furthermore faces charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), which were laid by his ex-wife.
