Fashion and Photography Exhibition on Next Week
By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The Five Seasons, a combined exhibition of fashion and photography by Melanie Harteveld-Becker and Amy Schoeman will be restaged as from Tuesday at Studio 77, it was announced in a press release. The event was first exhibited as a Bank Windhoek-sponsored project in the National Gallery of Namibia in 2002. The 15 abstract photographs that made up the original five triptychs have been printed on canvas in the form of vertical triptychs and will be one of 15 portfolios that will also be shown in April at Amy Schoeman's Retrospective Exhibition. This specific exhibition is scheduled to be presented by the University of Stellenbosch in the Sasol Gallery and the University Museum from April 23 to May 30. Melanie Harteveld Becker's designs will complement the Five Seasons and the 11 photographs at the exhibition. The Five Seasons concept was inspired by the well-known mediaeval student's song Gaudeamus igitur, the fifth season being the Hereafter. The photography expresses in an abstraction of colour and form the progression of the four seasons as we know them in nature, and by implication the changing seasons of our existence on earth. The fashion designs, reflecting this same metamorphosis, were based on the structure, colour and textures of the photographs. Representing Spring and Autumn, six of Melanie's original designs and accompanying sketches will be on display at Studio 77, as well as story boards of all five seasons, outlining the development of the garments. Melanie will close the exhibition on Sunday February 10 at 17h00 with a talk on the development of the Five Seasons project and the fusion of the fashion designs with the photographs.
