Fear grips region after suspected ritual killing

RUNDU – Police in the Mukwe constituency of Kavango East are investigating a case of murder and defeating the course of justice after a lifeless body of a 17-year-old boy was discovered in the Kavango River at Rudhiva village on Friday.

According to the Kavango East police, it is suspected that the boy was killed and his body dumped in the river between Sunday, 26 June 2022, from 23h00 to Friday 1 July 2022 at 06h00 at Rudhiva village in the Mukwe constituency.

“It is alleged that the suspect(s) unlawfully and intentionally killed Thikundeko Felix Disho with an unknown object and dumped the body in the river with the intention to defeat the course of justice,’’ read the weekend serious crime report, compiled by Elifas Kuwinga of the Namibian police.

“The body was recovered with multiple organs missing and was transported to Rundu State Mortuary for storage and pending autopsy. The next of kin were informed,’’ he said.

NBC reported yesterday that two suspects, 22-year-old Dengwa Steven Leevi and 36-year-old Kandere Alexander Kavange, have been charged with the murder of Disho.

The duo appeared in the Mukwe periodic court yesterday. They were denied bail.

They are also facing a charge of defeating the course of justice.

In a similar crime report, the police at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region is also investigating a murder case at Liselo Njangula Bar, Katima Mulilo.

The lifeless body of Mitelo Muuntu, aged 51, a Zambian male (security guard), was discovered on Friday, 1 July 2022, around 02h00 by his employer in front of the bar on the ground with a big cut wound on the back of his head.

The police did not reveal if the victim was preventing a robbery or not, as no case of robbery was made. “The motive for murder is not yet determined. Suspect(s) are unknown at this stage but investigation is ongoing,’’ the police said.
