2016-10-20Staff Report 2 Windhoek A man caught on video ramming his pick-up truck into the back of a sedan on Tuesday before he fled the scene has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court today. Namibian police spokesperson Slogan Matheus said the owner of the vehicle that was bumped opened a case of malicious damage to property against the pick-up driver. The driver of the white sedan also filed charges against the female passenger, who jumped from the pick-up vehicle and allegedly hurled racist remarks at him. The woman is reported to have said: “We will kill you, f**king black man,” before they sped off. “We managed to trace the suspect and arrested him on Tuesday around 20h00 at his residence in Khomasdal,” Matheus said. “We also made contact with the female passenger and warned her about the incident and that allegations of this kind have been made against her.” He said the female passenger was not arrested. A short CCTV clip circulating on social media shows a white sedan coming to a standstill at Wika service station along Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue, with the white pick-up driving just behind it. The driver of the sedan is seen climbing out and going around the vehicle and opening the passenger door to seemingly grab something. The driver of the white pick-up reversed slightly while his female companion stepped out of the vehicle. The pick-up is then seen aggressively bumping into the stationary sedan from behind, leaving it damaged. The female passenger could also be seen pointing fingers at the sedan driver, before jumping into the pick-up truck, which then sped off. By yesterday afternoon the video was viewed over 26 000 times, shared 727 times and generated nearly 500 comments on the Facebook page of one subscriber. Commenting on the post, Jony Heikki Billz said no matter what a person does to another they should not commit a crime as a way of seeking justice. “If something wrong was done to that white man he was not supposed to go bump someone’s car. That is a crime. If he knew that he is right, then he was not supposed to drive away. “We have laws that govern our country and they should be applied accordingly, without considering the colour or race of a person, whether the offender or offended,” Billz remarked. 2016-10-20Staff Report 2
