2016-07-29Staff Report 2 Windhoek With Namibian football already facing the agony of having to limp on without an FA Cup for an entire season, local football enthusiasts yesterday again listened to and watched with an aching heart the launch of the 3rd and final edition of the Standard Bank Super Cup. The final edition of the Super Cup was officially launched yesterday at Football House and a draw to determine the competition’s other finalists was also conducted. The original format of the competition usually accommodates the Namibia Premier League (NPL) winners and winners of the FA Cup, which was the Bidvest Cup. But since the Bidvest Cup went the way of the dinosaurs after a three-year presence which ended last year, the organisers of the Super Cup were this year faced with a scenario where they only had the premier league winner (which is Tigers) and no FA Cup winner - hence the draw to try and close the gap in the line-up. As such, the organisers opted to choose the teams that finished in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places on last season’s league log standings, which are Black Africa, Tura Magic, African Stars and Mighty Gunners. With Tigers already waiting in the final, Black Africa, Tura Magic, African Stars and Mighty Gunners will now have to scramble for a place in the final via the preliminary playoffs which will be played on August 13 in Windhoek. Tura Magic will play against Black Africa in the first match of the preliminaries, followed by African Stars against Mighty Gunners, with the two winners from each match progressing on to contest a spot in the final of the 2016 Super Cup alongside Tigers. The Cup final is slated for September 10 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek. The one-off match will see winners go home N$500 000 richer and the loser to be consoled with N$250 000. 2016-07-29Staff Report 2
