Freyer, Pretorius wins FNB Wines2 Whales Mountain Bike Adventure
Team Kia Namibia’s Martin Freyer and Michael Pretorius have won the men’s team Event at this year’s FNB Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Adventure in South Africa. The three day event, which took some 1 300 (65 teams) riders over 214 kilometres from Lourensford Wine Estate to Onrust Caravan Park (just outside of Hermanus), came to an end on Sunday. Freyer and Pretorius completed race in a combined winning time of 11:06:16 seconds. The pair had been dominating since the first stage on Friday. They quickly took the lead claiming victory in a lightning fast time of 04:06:31. According to Freyer their focus was on enjoying the stage, and not on winning. “W2W is a definite bucket list event. The trails, sponsors, rider lounge, everything is amazing.” The following day Freyer and Pretorius secured yet another stage victory in an impressive time of 03:14:54. “Originally our only strategy was to enjoy the route, but last night we decided that our goal today would be to reach the single track first,” said Pretorius. “This enabled us to enjoy our speed and have more fun. W2W definitely features the best single track and amazing scenery. The vibe is really great. When you cross the finish line you can’t help but smile.” They eventually secured the overall win with yet another first place on Sunday, completing the track in 03:44:51. “Although the wind made things difficult today, the stage was amazing,” said Freyer. Anton Koller and Gregor Krall of Team Rehidrat 2 came in second, while Jeffrey Sullivan and Deon Van Vuuren of Team Far Canal finished third.
