2015-05-28Staff Report 2 Tsumeb Eleven women working for Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb donated infant formula and groceries to a temporary shelter for victims of gender-based violence (GBV) here. Tsumeb Family Cupport Centre is an NGO that provides temporary shelter for victims of gender-based violence in Tsumeb and surrounding areas. The group of female employees at Dundee Precious Metals, Women of Merit, was established last year and has since been identifying charity organisations and church groups they assist with food and clothing. The group donated infant formula and essential groceries as well as old clothing to the shelter that is also home to a baby boy that was dumped in February this year near an informal settlement on the outskirts of Tsumeb. “We are truly blessed to be blessing others,” said the spokesperson of the group Tjihuze Kanjoa. Receiving the donations on behalf of the shelter for GBV victims was Leon Hloko, the project co-ordinator and also a social worker by profession. Hloko said he was pleased with the kind gesture from Women of Merit. A founding member of the Tsumeb Family Support Centre, said she was humbled by the kind gesture and commended the efforts of the women. “We are very grateful for the donation, we only depend on the hospital for formula milk for our babies and toddlers and sometimes even run out of it and this is really a kind gesture,” she stated. The centre hosts 14 children and sometimes women depending on the nature of the cases of GBV and the facility also provides counselling to victims, especially preparing them for court. The centre only depends on donations from the public and business entities, as they are registered with the government but are not funded directly by the government. 2015-05-28Staff Report 2
