Geingob calls for balanced media reporting
Windhoek President Hage Geingob says he is aware that publications and media outlets need to make money, but he feels balanced reporting should be upheld. Unfortunately good news is not profitable. There are positive stories, but positive stories do not sell newspapers,” said the President yesterday when he launched the Echoes Africa Magazine in Windhoek. Geingob urged the media to showcase the positive developments in the country. “These days our media is open, and publish and broadcast stories on some of the poor conditions our people are living in, which draws attention so that we can assist these people. But here I would like to call for a balanced approach,” he said. He said he is hopeful that the launch of the magazine “will open the gateway to a new era of accurate, informed and unbiased reporting on issues related to Africa. “I am aware that this publication has been established with the primary objective of telling the African story, African stories told by Africans themselves and not as presented by the Western media,” he said. By telling the true African story, Geingob said, the magazine will help erase the negative perceptions of the continent, which has been put in the minds of people by the international media. Publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine Ify Ezinwa said the publication seeks to erase negative perceptions held about the continent as a result of news presented by the Western media. “Like any other continent, Africa has its own problems, but news about Africa is always sensationalized by the western media. We endeavour to focus our attention on developmental issues,” said Ezinwa. She also stressed that there is a need for more resources to be availed to media outlets on the continent. Minister of Basic Education, Arts and Culture Katrina Hanse-Himwarwa, outgoing Nigerian High Commissioner to Namibia Biodun Olorunfemi, Information, Communications and Technology Permanent Secretary Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana and Special Advisor to the information minister, Mvula ya Nangolo, were also in attendance during the launch.
