Geingob heads to Pretoria for SADC Organ Troika summit

President Hage Geingob will today attend an extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika Summit in Pretoria, South Africa.

The summit will, among others, receive and consider a progress report on the operations of the SADC Mission In Mozambique (SAMIM) since its deployment in the Cabo Delgado Province to fight an Islamist insurgency. The summit will also determine a way forward for the mission.

Geingob is attending in the capacity of incoming chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.  The organ is responsible for six key areas, which includes politics and diplomacy, defence, police, state security, public security and regional peacekeeping. Geingob is expected back in the country on the same day.

In April, the regional bloc noted with concern the acts of terrorism perpetrated against innocent civilians, and women and children in some districts of the Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique, and reaffirmed SADC’s continued commitment to contribute towards bringing lasting peace and security.

The summit further condemned the terrorist attacks in the strongest terms, and affirmed that such heinous attacks could not be allowed to continue without a proportionate regional response.
