GIZ equips Ohangwena youth with sport management skills
2015-08-12Staff Report 2 Eenhana A sport management training-course was offered to youngsters in Ohangwena Region at Eenhana last week. The training was aimed at interested youth, coaches and other sports teachers in order to provide the participants with basic management skills in the organisation of sports festivals, tournaments and the management of sports facilities and equipment. Speaking at the training session, Federick Sitali, the Regional Coordinator of Namibia Football Association (NFA) and head of the Galz and Goals programme in Ohangwena region, said the training is highly appreciated and valued. He also said it was timely arranged by the sponsors, Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zisammenarbeit (GIZ). “Everyone loves sport for health and we should learn on how to manage our own resources and these efforts and intervention should be highly appreciated,” he said. He further commended the GIZ for coaching young people in the region, as this would contribute to their living a healthier lifestyle and help develop the life skills, which can serve as a means of implementing awareness and prevention campaigns on HIV/AIDS. The one-day training was conducted and facilitated by the former Technical Director of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), Klaus Staerk, who has tremendous expertise in football, talent identification and the training of coaches and judges in Namibia. “We discovered that there is a lack of capacitated sport experts in the country and there is a big need to mobilise resources to invest in sports for the Namibian youth,” Staerk said. He explained to Youth Corner that the Ohangwena Region was identified because of its love of sports. The GIZ Sport for Development Sector Programme, in close cooperation with the German Olympic Sports Confederation has extended their support to the Ohangwena Region, where they have introduced it to all relevant partners and stakeholders since February this year. Since then football and basketball have been used as tools to educate young people about sexual reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention and life skills. The training brought together more than twenty youths, among them coaches, sports teachers and coordinators from the region. 2015-08-12Staff Report 2
