Gladiators get ready for Zambia
Windhoek NFA Women Super League strikers V-Power Angels Sara Anstino and UNAM Bokkies’ Elina Uulumbu are some of the new faces in contention for the Brave Gladiators football team to play Zambia in the 2016 CAF Women Cup of Nations Cameroon qualifiers. Brave Gladiators coach Jacqui Shipanga last week started preparation for the all important away first leg, first round match in Zambia on March 5 and apart from the regular players who have featured before at national level, Women Super League goal machines Sara Anstino of V-Power Angels and UNAM Bokkies top scorer Elina Uulumbu are in the 27-member ladies squad. “We started training from Tuesday to Friday and we will continue from Monday to 19 February before we announce the final 18 ladies to go to Zambia by 24 February for final preparations. We have played Zambia over the years at various tournaments and we want a positive start away from home. “We cannot afford to lose to Zambia in the qualifiers. We played at home last time out in the CAF Championship and now we need to prove to the world that we can qualify as well,” Shipanga states. Intimidating goalkeeper Batista Kasume of Galz & Goals is also drafted into the team to compete for a place. Another Under-17 player in the training squad is the combative Asteria Angula who is expected to push Memory Ngonda for a place on the trip to Zambia in midfield. “The Super League is really giving us options and players know that if they push themselves hard enough they can make the team and that is the way to go. Young players too have the chance to play for the senior team and also have the chance to be seen and be drafted into whatever national team,” Shipanga explains. Here is the provisional women’s squad: Goalkeepers: Agnes Kauzuu and Mellissa Matheus (Tura Magic), Novata Paulus (21 Brigade) and Batista Kasume (Galz & Goals). Defenders: Uerikondjera Kasaona, Ndapewa Katuta, Twelikondjela Amukoto, Vitapamue Kamahene (NAMPOL Ladies), Stacey Naris and Ester Amukwaya (UNAM Bokkies), Lovisa Mulunga and Mellissa Hikuam (Tura Magic) and Lorraine Jossob (Poly Babes). Midfielders: Thomalina Adams, Emma Naris, Anouska Kordom, Juliana Skrywer, Juliana Blou, Vistorine Shangula and Memory Ngonda (Tura Magic), Veueziwa Kotjipati (Armenia Bielefeld), Asteria Angula (Galz & Goals).
