Golf's Amateurs to Slug It Out
"By Carlos Kambaekwa WINDHOEK The country's leading amateur golfers are to tee off when the national open championship get underway at the Windhoek Country Club golf course tomorrow. Approximately 100 golfers from the length and breadth of the country will once again pursue their aspirations to stake a serious claim for the elusive Amateur Open Championship, sponsored by Bank Windhoek and which carries a total prize money of N$30 000. In a well-articulated media statement, Bank Windhoek says its association with golf has been influenced by the challenges to develop this particular discipline across the cultural spectrum, with specific emphasis on junior level. ""It's exciting to note that the interest in golf has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years,"" said Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment at Bank Windhoek. The Namibian Amateur Golf Open has been the biggest event on the domestic golfing calendar since 1935 and Bank Windhoek has been associated with the annual prestigious competition over the past 21 years consecutively. Hugh Mortimer of the Windhoek Golf Club commended Bank Windhoek for its generous support and said the local financial institution has always been amongst the leading sponsors of sporting events. ""Bank Windhoek is not only sponsoring golf and other sporting events but also cultural, environmental and social events, thus we in the golf family would humbly like to thank Bank Windhoek and its Board of Directors for their unwavering commitment and support which can only benefit the entire Namibian nation.""
