Good Chances of Being Cooled Down over Xmas
2006-12-20Staff Report 2 "By Petronella Sibeene WINDHOEK After enduring the scorching sun in most parts of the country, Namibians can heave a sigh of relief as temperatures begin to drop as from today through to Christmas. Temperatures will start dropping by three to five degrees Celcius in the north, central and eastern parts of Namibia. Although there will be a slight increase of two to three degrees Celcius in central parts of the country tomorrow, a general drop by that level will be experienced as from Friday through to the weekend. The change in temperatures, according to the weather forecaster, Odillo Kgobetsi, is due to a low-pressure system from the West (Angola) bringing an influx of moisture into the Namibian interior. The eastern and south-eastern parts can expect showers. Places such as Kavango and Nkurenkuru have already started receiving rain, with 19 millimetres recorded on Monday. Kgobetsi says the extreme temperatures during the past few weeks are not peculiar to this time of year considering that it is summer after all and most parts of the country are expriencing temperatures between 30 and 37 degrees Celsius. ""There will be showers - the onset of rain"", Kgobetsi said. Based on the summary from the 10th Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF) held in Gaborone in September 2006, most SADC countries stand a good chance of receiving normal to above-normal rainfall during January, February and March. The northern parts of the SADC region - DRC, north-eastern Angola, northern Tanzania, most of northern Zambia, southern Malawi and part of northern Mozambique - stand a good chance of normal to above-normal rainfall by January next year." 2006-12-20Staff Report 2
