Residents of Goreangab informal settlement are demanding increased security from the City of Windhoek. 
According to the residents, a number of security officers contracted privately by the city to maintain law and order in the area only offer their services during the day. 

However, residents argue most of the crime in the area is prevalent at night. 
“These security officers should also help us fight crime in our communities. Why are they only quick to respond on illegal settlements of residents but not other crimes?” questioned community activist Jeremia Itenge. 
He also accused the City Police of not responding on time when crime cases are reported to authorities.  

“Many crimes mostly happen at night and the city should come to our rescue,” he said. 
Approached for comment, city spokesperson Harold Akwenye welcomed suggestions by the community but was quick to add that financial resources equally play a role. 

“It is a good thing. We have to look after the communities. However, everything is monetary-related, meaning if these people have to work at night, then it is another cost,” he said. 
Samora Machel constituency councillor Nestor Kalola told New Era they have already engaged City Police chief Abraham Kanime with other suggestions on how to effectively tackle crime in the area. 

“The person whom chief Kanime referred to work with us is currently on holiday but we will surely start electing community police officers as soon as possible,” he said.
